This place has delicious food in a very comfortable atmosphere. I have never had anything here that I didn't like. Proof of this is the sometimes long wait to get in. Make sure you wait, you won't be sorry.

You won't find The Liberal Club by accident if you are visiting Fall River. I found it through the web site roadfood.com . The name has nothing to do with politics. The Liberal Club is a social club with a banquet hall and a restaurant and bar, which are open to the public. Everyone in Fall River knows about The Liberal Club and it gets crowded on Saturday nights. It is in the middle of a mixed neighborhood of homes and shops but as long as you have a GPS, you won't have trouble getting there. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu that says "Mozambique". Shrimp Mozambique is to die for as is chicken Mozambique. It is a slightly spicy lemon based sauce that is popular is southern Portugal. When added to shrimp and chicken, it is magnificent. All the scallop dishes are great also and there is an oil and vinegar sauce that you can add to the mix that makes for a splendid combination. The building may be sparse as far as decor goes but the menu and prices more than make up for the sparse decor. If you are in Fall River to visit Lizzie Borden's house or Battleship Cove, take a side trip to The Liberal Club,

The foods ok with high prices. Also charges $3 if you split. That is unacceptable. When you get older you just cant eat as much. I've been to worse places but I would not highly recommend this club.

One of the best restaurants I have eaten at. When I arrive, I usually order Portuguese/Kale soup which arrives hot and is very flavorful as my appetizer. I then order either Chicken Parmesan, Boneless Fried Chicken or a steak and cheese sandwich all of which are delicious and have obviously been prepared by a talented chef. On the chicken Parmesan, the pasta is cooked perfectly as well as the chicken which is juicy and tender. The ratio of chicken to pasta is just right. For the boneless fried chicken- the chicken, is juicy and tender as well as in the Parmesan. The gravy which comes with it is delectable. The mashed potatoes are mashed perfectly and taste great. The steak and cheese- the steak is sliced perfectly and put on in an abundance with some melted cheese. I would 115% recommend this restaurant to anybody in the area!

Love everything about this hidden treasure. I wish we took pictures but we eat the food too fast. Smelts!!! To die for. Everything we have had is truly delicious. The staff and patrons are so friendly.

I went here on a Saturday night with my boyfriend and his family. To my surprise this place was packed for a little hole in the wall down a couple back streets. This women came to our table assuming she was our waiter but she was just the cocktail waitress. Supposedly on the other side of the restaurant is a bar they acquired. So when you ordered drinks, you have to ask the cocktail waitress instead of your waiter. I just ordered a soda and it came in a little plastic cup. No free refills. And CASH ONLY! Any who service is really really slow. Don't come here if you don't have time. I ordered white clam sauce special and it was absolutely delicious. My boyfriend order fried clams and those were delicious. The food is amazing here but the service was just really slow!

March 13, 2014 The Liberal Club has been a Fall River staple for as long as I can remember. City residents come here for parties, weddings, funerals and - in the summertime - Portuguese feasts. On this freezing winter day, Mom and I visited their restaurant for something to warm our cold bellies. Once inside we were instructed to sit in a certain booth by one of the waitresses. She later came over to take our drink order, which is paid for separately. We chose two bottles of diet root beer which came to $3.50. The waitress left us alone with the menus to give us time to decide on a meal. Since we had been to the Liberal Club before, I was focused on their famous French onion soup ($4.95). It was excellent when I had it the last time and it was just what I needed to warm up. Mom already knew what she wanted - the baked scrod ($14.95). She had heard great things about the scrod but had never tried it. Today was the day. When the waitress returned, we placed our order. In addition to Mom's scrod and my crock of soup, I also ordered a tuna salad sandwich with fries ($7.95). While we were waiting for our food to arrive, we noticed that the restaurant started to fill up. By the end of our meal, almost every booth was taken. Our starters came out first. Mom's dinner came with a side salad and she chose Parmesan peppercorn as her dressing. She said the vegetables were crunchy and fresh and the dressing was tasty. My soup - as expected - was amazing. I could order this every single time I come here. The cheese topping is thick and gooey and the onion soup is rich and flavorful. It's got a great taste to it and the bread at the bottom broke up the spiciness of the broth. A fabulous choice. The entrees arrived soon after we finished the soup and salad and everything looked great. My sandwich was surprisingly scrumptious! The Liberal Club uses red onion in their tuna salad and that really gave the sandwich a kick. I chose rye bread which was soft and fresh. The fries were good and plentiful. There was also a crunchy pickle on the plate. Everything was fantastic. Mom's scrod had a Ritz cracker crumb topping and came with a side of real mashed potatoes and cole slaw. The slaw was cool and crisp, the real potatoes were savory and the scrod was white and flaky. Mom said that the fish was cooked perfectly and the piece itself was generous. You didn't even need a knife; the scrod fell apart with just a fork. Our food total came to $29.80. As Mom and I headed back out into the frigid temperature, we vowed to return to the Liberal Club. Although I am obsessed with the French onion soup, the next time we visit I want to try one of their delicious dinner options. I'm sure everything will be as appetizing as always. A definite hidden gem in the Fall River area. My grandmother swears by this place, and has been going there for years and years. She knows the family that owns it who are very nice people, very down to earth. I've never had anything bad here! The calamari is AMAZING, also my favoite, as well as the chowder. Hands down my favorite chowder. I've had salads, meatball sandwich, fried chicken, baked stuffed shrimp, shrimp and broccoli with ziti, baked haddock, shrimp/chicken mozambique, buffalo chicken dish, etc.... everything is great, reasonably priced and the portions are HUGE... I usually get at least another meal or two out of my dinner. Definitely recommend!!

My family has raved about this place for years, but my wife and I had our first experience with The Liberal Club today, when we had an early dinner to celebrate my parents' 57th wedding anniversary. The place is decidedly low-brow, which has never been a turn-off for us(!!), but we were told "just wait...the food is AMAZING". When the food arrived (which it did quickly) it was good and the portions were massive. I'm quite sure the calamari we had was fresh and the seafood platters my family shared looked as fresh as the calamari. My wife's shrimp mozambique was good, but, honestly, we've had better. My chicken mozambique was....well....let's say disappointing; what looked to be sauteed chicken tenders in what was supposed to be a 'fiery' sauce that tasted more of wine than anything else, served over a huge plate of pasta. If you want value for your money, this might be the place for you; the bill for six people (apps, entrees, soft drinks) came to $150 including tip and we all took home doggie bags with enough food for at least one more meal each. I have to say that I've had better Portuguese food in Southeastern New England and I might even say The Liberal Club might not live up to the hype, but it might still be worth the experience.

I've dined here on numerous occasions and have rarely had a sub par experience. The atmosphere isn't anything to write home about; however the food soon makes this irrelevant. Their calamari appetizer is absolutely delicious and their French onion soup is one of the best around. Their Portuguese steak plate entree is delightful and also a really great portion. I've had most things on their menu and have happily enjoyed all of them! The only strange thing is they have a separate cocktail waitress who takes your drink order which is a weird set up. Also, cash only.

I've been eating at this place since I was a kid. always had great food. Casual atmosphere. Strange how the drinks are served. Never had a bad meal or experience.

This is a great old dive but lots of fun cash only and don't try to order drinks and food from the same person one person gets you your drinks the other your food if your in the bar area. The food was very good but baked rather than broiled if the food had been broiled I would have given another star as my meal was still very tasty. The lobster was fresh as was the scallops and the fish looked great I left full.

Great down-home kind of place. I love the boneless fried chicken dinner. The mashed potatoes are great, but then, so are the fries. Can't go wrong! The set up is very casual, almost like a K of C or something. But the service is good and the food is better. I'm not even a fan of seafood at all, but I still love it here. Prices are great, but cash only.

Super casual, lots of (really good) food for your money, and friendly staff. A lot of times there's a wait for a table at dinner time, but it's worth it. The only drawback here is, as others have stated, it's cash only and drink orders come from the bar so you have a drink waitress who you pay separately from the food waitress. The reason the Liberal Club gets that 4th star is the seafood, which (for the price) is better than most I've had on the island. The fried clams are really good, and for a place like that they actually serve vegetables (canned green beans, but still, most fried food places don't have veggies at all!). I've never had a bad meal here, and I always have plenty for leftovers the next day.

Always a decent meal here. I live right around the corner and would visit more often if the service was better. It's mediocre at best, and how you have to pay for your beverages separate (from another server) who is usually very slow because he/she is serving the whole restaurant. Also, invest in a credit/debit card reader. The days of only cash is getting old and very annoying

If you want fried seafood or a great Portuguese steak, this is a fabulous place. Small but clean, the dining room is separate from the bar but you can order food in both places. The onion rings are supreme and for a different taste, order the smelt marinade as a dipping sauce for the onion rings.Superb! I have never had a bad meal here. My only complaint is that I wish they served more baked seafood in a heart healthy manner. The baked items tend to be saturated in butter and cracker crumbs. But it tastes great!

The food is good here, my only complaints are: hours WAY too short (they close at like 7:00, so you people who work, fuggedaboutit!!), and the fact you must pay (and tip) a separate waitress to get your drinks, even soda. Who developed this weird system? I can go to the bar myself and get a drink. But better yet, how about the waitress taking food and drink order together? There's a concept. Anyway, short of that, the food is good, although the quantities have gone done, and the prices have gone up recently (not unexpected I suppose, but if you haven't been in awhile, don't be shocked.) All in all, it's a decent place to go, just get there early and bring plenty of cashola.

If you like fried seafood, this is the place to go! My father was put on to this place quite a few years ago by one of his friends who lives in Fall River. Anything on the seafood list is sure to please! One of my favorites is the fish and chips. The calamari with garlic, oil and hot peppers is also delicious! A friend of mine swears by the fried clam plate and gets it every time we go. The Liberal Club is a VERY casual place. One half is an actual social club with a bar and the other half is a restaurant. It may be a little bit hard to find...it is a hidden gem, but it's worth it! Great food all the time!

Pretty good! Atmosphere is clean, working-class casual. Food was good and hot, plentiful and reasonably priced. No credit cards, but an ATM is avail at the bar.
